South Africa have been hit with the news that both Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis will miss the third and final one-day international against Pakistan on Saturday.
According to the bet365 cricket page, paceman, Steyn, has been released from the squad due to a side strain that he has been struggling with for a while.
The 30-year-old missed his countries opening two Champions Trophy matches during the summer with the problem and has now been given extra time off in a bid to rectify the issue going into the busy winter period.
All-rounder Kallis is still suffering from a finger injury that he picked-up during the opening clash in Cape Town which AB De Villiers’ men lost by 23 runs.
The Proteas’ defeat in Wednesday’s second match in Port Elizabeth meant Pakistan claimed their first ever series win on South African soil and fans who bet with bet365 the sides will only be playing for pride when they meet at the weekend in Gauteng.
However, the injuries will certainly hurt South Africa as they look to win the final clash of the series as despite his setbacks, Steyn still managed to taking a brilliant 6-39 in the second match, figures that followed three wickets in the opening match.
Kallis has also looked sharp, returning to the one-day fold following a self imposed exile which lasted over a year, hitting a half century as he almost saved his nation after his fellow batsman had struggled early on.
With series against both Australia and India to come over the next few months, as well as the Twenty20 World Cup, it may well prove to be a masterstroke to allow the pair a bit of extra time off, while it also gives a couple of others the chance to stake their claim for a place in the side.
