Fabian Delph’s first ever goal in the Premier League helped Aston Villa come out on top 3-2 in a thrilling encounter away to Southampton.
The win lifts Villa up to 10th in the Premier League table. They were twice pegged back by the Saints but Delph’s 30-yard strike was enough in the end to separate the teams.
It took 15 minutes for the deadlock to be broken at St Marys when Gabriel Agbonlahor rode the challenge of Dejan Lovren to break into the box where he finished past Paulo Gazzaniga in the hosts’ goal.
After the break it was Southampton who started the brightest. They were back on level terms not long into the second half as Jay Rodriguez headed home Nathaniel Clyne’s cross.
Just when it looked like the home side were getting on top, and looking good to take the lead, Villa scored against the run of play. Libor Kazak was the man boss Paul Lambert had to thank as he was on the end of Karim El Ahmadi delivery from the right.
Dani Osvalod was gifted a chance from close range midway through the second half in which he took to bring the scores level again at 2-2.
Both teams were set to settle for a point each in a very entertaining game, when Delph popped up with a superb strike from 30-yards to win it for his side ten minutes from time.
