Philipp Lahm says that he is excited about the prospect of facing Bayern Munich teammate, Arjen Robben, when Germany take on Holland, on Wednesday.
The pair have wreaked havoc throughout Europe, this season, teaming up on the right flank for the Bavarians, as they made it to the final of the Champions League.
However, due to Die Mannschaft’s lack of a top class left-back, Lahm has been switched to the other side of the field for Euro 2012, meaning he is likely to come-up directly against Robben, during their side’s meeting in Kharkiv.
The Germany skipper is renowned as one of the world’s best defenders, regardless of what side of the field he is played on, and will certainly not be concerned by facing Robben. The two players are very popular characters with fans who bet on the Champions League.
Joachim Loew’s men won their opening game, against Portugal, and they know that victory against the Dutch, on Wednesday, would guarantee their place in the quarterfinals, while the Oranje will be desperate for the points, after suffering defeat against Denmark, on Saturday.
The duel between Robben and Lahm will certainly have a bearing on the outcome of the game, and the Bayern Munich skipper is certainly looking forward to the challenge of facing his great friend.
“I am looking forward to the duel”, Lahm told Sportbild. “As a player you always want to play the best, and Arjen is one of the best around. He has the ability to beat anyone down both flanks with his speed and dribbling, even when he is known to cut inside.
“The Dutch cannot lose against us and, in this game, we will not be friends. Arjen will be especially motivated against us”, he added. The match is set to be a great example of live football.
