Drumcove Lad landed a huge gamble in the sprint contest on Trainers Championship night at Perry Barr on Wednesday.
Chris Allsop’s sprinter got off to the best possible start as he led to the first bend before accelerating to a comfortable victory on the second race of the evening with a time of 15.95.
The National Sprinter winner was having his first run since December when he won an Open Race at Nottingham ahead of Magna Buddy. Despite his layoff from the track, Drumcove Lad showed no signs of being rusty at the Midlands track and looked right back to his best. Anyone following the greyhound betting online will have been impressed.
2010 Greyhound of the Year Jimmy Lollie was also making his return to the track in the race and was up with the running from the blue jacket up to the first bend. There was almost a collision with Drumcove Lad but the favourite managed to avoid any contact with Jimmy Lollie running on for second place ahead of Lil Risky in Trap Four.
Allsop then went onto to continue his success in the puppies contest in the following race of the night with Smart Bid. Running out of Trap Three, the Monmore-based dog made every yard of the 480 metre contest.
Odds-on favourite Farloe Tango was making his debut following some impressive trials but struggled to match the pace up to the first bend. The Charlie Lister-trained runner did though, show a great turn of pace to get within a length of Smart Bid going up to the line to pick up second place, with Guinness Kev completing the placings in third.
Connections of Smart Bid were left delighted with their dog who now makes up for his narrow defeat in the Trafalgar Cup last month at Oxford.
