Formula One’s most popular driver, Rubans Barrichello, could well be lining up on the grid next season despite many believing the Brazilian to be heading for retirement. It looked unlikely that Barrichello would have his stay with Williams extended after naming only Pastor Maldonado so far as a certain for a seat in 2012, with the team admitting to having other priorities ahead of naming a second driver.
Adrian Sutil and Bruno Senna had both been expected to be battling it out for one of only two remaining seats for next season, the duo both looking to make an immediate return to F1 after being dropped by Force India and Renault respectively at the end of last year. Those following the up to date F1 betting odds will know this was the case.
Barrichello, however, took to his Twitter account to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, claiming to have held talks with Williams regarding his future.
“Just came back from England…now some holidays…and waiting for good news from Williams”.
So, it appears the chances of Barrichello being able to line up for what would be his 19th year in Formula One have been dramatically boosted. Last year won’t have been one that the veteran will have wanted to have finished his career on and many in the sport will be desperately hoping to see Rubans handed another chance in 2012.
What it would say about Williams’ ambitions and prospects for the new season would remain to be seen, however.
